Please help me! Problems with my dishwasher?

We have a Whirlpool Quiet Partner II and we never have used it until yesterday(over a year since we moved into the house). It's new, never been used before, but after using it yesterday, it is a pain! We don't have the manual, but we set it to "soak & scour", "sani-rinse", and "heated dry" on "normal" setting and hit start. It started soaking the dishes and once all the water got in there, it set for almost an hour and we started to get concerned. Then I took off "soak & scour" and left only "sani-rinse" and "heated dry" and the dishwasher began washing the dishes. Once it washed and drained them, it would refill and wash them again. And again, and again, and again. It had to have washed the dishes 10 times. So we pushed "cancel/drain" and tried only "Heated dry" to see if it would go ahead and dry the dishes instead of washing them like it started washing them once we took "soak & scour" off, but it didn't. It went right back to washing them. In the end, after 2 hours of trying to get it to simply wash and dry the dishes, we ended up just drying the dishes ourselves. We put a tablet and the "drying" liquid in the slots where they are supposed to go so I don't believe the problem was to do with that? Is there something wrong I'm doing?
